For Project 3b of my MA in Communication Design, I devised a multilingual wayfinding system for the University of Reading's Health & Life Sciences building, incorporating both English and Hindi. Despite being a very well-constructed and costly facility, the building suffered from inadequate wayfinding provisions. With its extensive use of wood in its architectural design, I based my wayfinding system around this material. The resulting system was dynamic, colourful, visually striking and multi-layered, with the aim of enhancing navigation for students, staff and visitors to the building's museum alike. Through thoughtful use of wood-inspired elements, the system sought to simplify and streamline movement through the complex space.
As part of the project, I designed a set of custom pictograms that harmonised with the overall aesthetic of the wayfinding system, enhancing visual communication throughout the building. These pictograms were carefully crafted to match the chosen typeface, incorporating elements such as the dot of the 'i' and the curves of other letters, ensuring a cohesive visual language across all components of the wayfinding system.
Additionally, I created a detailed map of the facility, carefully designed to provide clear and intuitive guidance to users, helping them navigate the various floors and areas of the building efficiently.
